Once you've set a sprite size and a palette, the next step is outlining the shape and adding light and shadow for volume. The common mistakes here are wrapping every shape in a thick black outline and splitting shading into too many steps. This guide covers how to add outlines and shading with restraint.

Outlines: whether to, and what color

An outline's job is to separate the shape from the background. If your game has busy backgrounds or changing brightness, a 1px outline around the whole silhouette is the safe choice. For color, use a saturated dark color slightly darker than the character's darkest color rather than pure black. Pure black stands out from the surrounding colors and makes the drawing look heavy.

Selective outlining

Lightening the outline on the light-facing sides (top/left) keeps the shape from looking boxed-in while preserving the silhouette.

Wrapping the whole shape in a dark line can make the drawing look flat and sticker-like. Selective outlining omits or lightens the outline on the lit side (usually top and outer) and keeps the dark outline only on the shaded side. The silhouette holds while the form looks like it's sitting in light.

Shading: 2-3 steps is enough

On a small canvas, splitting light and shadow into five or six steps shrinks each step to a 1-pixel band and just looks messy. Start with base color + one shadow step + one highlight step, three total. The shadow color isn't just "darker" - the key is to rotate the hue toward cool. For smoother transitions, use dithering for intermediate steps.

Avoid pillow shading

The most common beginner mistake is "pillow shading" - darkening uniformly inward along the shape's edges. It erases the light direction and makes everything look like a puffed-up pillow. Decide that light comes from one direction and put shadow only on the opposite side to get real volume.

Practical checklist

To check a finished sprite at another scale, scale it by an integer factor in the image resize tool. Outline rules for small HUD and inventory icons are covered further in the UI & HUD icon design guide.

Frequently asked questions

Should outlines be pure black?

Pure black is heavy and tends to clash with your other colors. A saturated dark color (deep purple, brown) slightly darker than the character's darkest color blends in far better as an outline.

What is selective outlining?

Instead of outlining the whole shape, you omit or lighten the outline on the lit (top/outer) side and keep a dark outline only on the shaded (bottom/inner) side. The silhouette stays intact while the drawing looks less boxed-in.

Can I use anti-aliasing in pixel art?

Manually softening the stair-stepping on curves can help. But it's safest only when the sprite is scaled by integer factors, and applied sparingly to interior curves rather than the character's outer silhouette.
